Annual rodeo raises money for local causes

Professional rodeo with a little bit of dancing and laughter return to Cleburne this week with the 2007 Johnson County Sheriff’s Posse PRCA Rodeo.
Sponsored by Lone Star Dodge Autoplex, organizers have planned four nights of professional rodeo with some of the top Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association cowboys, the “Wizard of Whips and Lariats” and rib-tickling funnyman Lecile Harris.
The annual rodeo raises money for the Sheriff’s Posse, a nonprofit that supports other nonprofits in the county.
The weeklong event started Saturday with a pancake breakfast at the Sheriff’s Posse Grounds on South Main Street in Cleburne. Proceeds from the pancake breakfast will benefit the Johnson County Children’s Advocacy Center. The rodeo parade through downtown Cleburne followed the breakfast at 10 a.m. Saturday’s events were rounded out with a live remote broadcast by radio station 92.1 KTFW and giveaways at the mutton bustin’ and stick horse rodeo in the indoor arena at the Sheriff’s Posse Grounds.
In a nod to technology, an electronic scoreboard atop the announcer’s stand will help the audience follow the action as it unfolds. Everyone will be able to see scores and times during the rodeo with scrolling information about the event’s sponsors.
Each night at the rodeo will follow a theme.
Wednesday is “God and Country Night.” Cross Country, which has been called America’s premiere inspirational country band, performs at 7 p.m., followed by the first PRCA rodeo performance.
“Youth Night” is Thursday. At 7 p.m. PRCA cowboys Trevor Brazile and Pete Smith will give testimonials and sign autographs and Cross Country will perform. The rodeo begins at 8 p.m.
The steer-roping slack begins at 9 a.m. Thursday.
Thursday’s excitement will be topped off with a dance with another appearance by the Steve Helms Band beginning at 9 p.m. at Caddo Street Grill in Cleburne.
Friday’s theme will help raise money for breast cancer research: “Tough Enough to Wear Pink Night.” For each ticketed person through the gates for the 8 p.m. rodeo who is wearing pink, the Sheriff’s Posse will donate $1 to breast cancer research.
Friday begins with the PRCA rodeo slack at 8 a.m., followed in the evening by the first round of the mutton bustin’ championships.
Friday’s events end with another rodeo dance, this time featuring the music of country celebrity Sonny Burgess, a Cleburne native, at Caddo Street Grill. The dance begins at 9 p.m.
The final day of the rodeo, Saturday, starts with the second round of the mutton bustin’ championship, at 7 p.m., followed by the final rodeo performance, at 8 p.m.
The “Grand Finale Rodeo Dance” is held afterwards at Caddo Street Grill. Jake Hooker and the Outsiders will provide music for the dance.
