CROWLEY -- Chris James’ first game as a head coach matched his Crowley Eagles against his alma mater, the Arlington Sam Houston Texans and their superstar quarterback Jamal Turner, one of the best players in the state.
Crowley just about matched Turner, but didn’t have quite enough in a nondistrict season-opening loss Friday night at Eagle Stadium.
Turner, a senior who has committed to Nebraska, accounted for 412 total yards, including 298 rushing and five rushing touchdowns in the Texans’ 51-48 victory.
Turner had touchdown runs of 1,1, 43, 24 and 5 yards. He accounted for a sixth touchdown when he found Demarcus Ardison for an 11-yard score in the second quarter.
As good as that performance was, it almost wasn’t enough.
Both teams had scored on every possession of the second half until Crowley, down seven with 9:22 left in the game, finally held the Texans to a three-and-out.
The subsequent punt, however, was muffed and Sam Houston took over, setting up Turner’s fifth touchdown from 5 yards out.
The Eagles had something left, however. On the first play of the following series after a good return, Crowley quarterback Sean Flynn dropped back from his own 40 and found LaBradford Harold streaking down the middle of the field for a 60-yard scoring strike.
Flynn and Harold hooked up on three scoring touchdown passes. Flynn was 7-of-10 passing for 186 yards, including 148 to Harold. Flynn also had 105 rushing yards on 11 carries.
A field goal by Miguel Alvarez gave the Texans a 10-point cushion with 1:26 left, but Flynn’s 19-yard touchdown run with 30 seconds left gave Crowley hope.
Sam Houston, though, recovered the ensuing onside kick to end the game.
Crowley sophomore running back Larry Cheeks had 189 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including a 74-yard burst in the third quarter.
